November is here… And that means it’s time to celebrate National Dog Show Month in Philadelphia!! The National Dog Show Presented by Purina hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia is taking place November 19-20 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA. And this weekend there are some fun Dog Show related family fun events you won’t want to miss, too!
Did you know that dog show competition was first held in Philadelphia in the late 1800s? (I didn’t!) The tradition-rich, all-breed dog show hosted by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia is arguably the oldest sporting competition in America.
The National Dog Show gives families an opportunity to “go behind the scenes” and see over 2,000 dogs from 200 breeds getting ready to strut their fluff. Only at a “benched’ show are the dogs at designated locations all weekend long so people can see and meet all the breeds. And there are only four benched shows left in America – New York (Westminster), Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco. Handlers and owners are more than happy to answer questions and talk about breed temperaments. This year, there are three newly recognized (by American Kennel Club) breeds that will be throwing their collars in the ring: American Hairless Terrier (Terrier group), Sloughi (Hound Group) and Pumi (Herding Group).
If you want to start celebrating before The National Dog Show on Sat. Nov. 19th, you’re in luck because this weekend The Perfect Dog will be running at The Centre Theater in Norristown. Based off of National Dog Show host John O’Hurley’s book, The Perfect Dog, will take place this Friday November 11th at 7PM and Saturday November 12th at 2 PM at The Centre Theater, 208 DeKalb Street in Norristown. The Friday evening show will include a bedtime story and kids are encouraged to come in their PJs and bring a blanket. The Saturday matinee show will have adoptable puppies in the theatre after the performance. General admission is $10. Purchase advance tickets online here or at the door day of show while available.
And tomorrow Thursday Nov. 10th there will be a pre-show fundraiser taking place at Petplan headquarters 3805 West Chester Pike, Suite 240, Newtown Square, PA. Petplan will donate $100 for each media member who goes down the two-story, red tube slide in their indoor dog park! Ranking dog show officials and celebrities will also generate donations if they go down the slide in pursuit of a maximum $5,000 donation to the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House. The event will also include new breeds, members of the National Dog Show Therapy Dog Ambassador Team and host David Frei.
